Transmigration | 轉生
|In both Western and Oriental philosophies of reincarnation and karma, a soul not only lives once, but are subject to the Cyclic rebirth within the Six Buddhist realms, namely “Rokudo”. After death, people are given new identities and assigned to different realms depending on the deeds they have committed in the previous lives, which also determine whether or not they will re-encounter related souls from prior lives with a different role.
Such is the concept of the design graduate Janus Ng’s final-year project “Reincarnation”. The「DesignXcel」team was then looking for a collaborator to upgrade her piece both technically and conceptually, and our answer was the experienced Elegance Jewellery International Ltd. (EJI). Janus has reinterpreted the original “Reincarnation” in her new work “Transmigration”, a bangle crossover project with EJI’s speciality on fine jewellery and kinetic mechanism. Other than that, a new spinning pendant proposal was also under way with similar concept and execution to fully exert the sparkles of EJI.
As the first edition of「DesignXcel」, “Transmigration” was also one of the collaborative works showcased at the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair with EJI, and later at the Hong Kong International Jewelry Manufacturers’ Show under the pavilion of Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers’ Association (HKJMA) to test the market waters on works of the somewhat sensitive philosophy. Allusions to reincarnation and transmigration are realised by the round pendant shape (endless) containing the outer 18K gold frame and the middle circle track of 6 sections (6 realms, Rokudo), as well as the inner bearing ring to allow spinning (Cyclic existence) with the huge diamonds within (different souls).
