Project Description

ST3

Description:

Despite the government suppression on street performances for reasons of blocking the roads or begging, the busking culture in Hong Kong has been blossoming in its own way. Being a regular participant in the street performing activities of his church, Brian understands very well the predicaments of buskers: apart from the unfavourable performance surroundings, the hassle of transporting equipment such as instruments and speakers through the narrow streets is especially frustrating.

Having studied design for 8 years, Brian still believes strongly in the problem-solving power of design. This is how his bespoke design for buskers, ST3, came about and got him the Outstanding Award by the Macau Y Show 2017. ST3 stands for the triple functions of Storage and Stage for the Street, is a portable luggage that combines a small stage, a suitcase and audio equipment. He did not only factor in high mobility and proper protection, ST3 also comes fully equipped with a hidden microphone stand and an amplifier with built-in light system.

When Brian expressed that he would resort either to crowdfunding platforms or companies specialised in amplifiers for further development or manufacturing of ST3, the「DesignXcel」team got him to meet Ron To, Vice President (Product Strategy and Management) of the US-based audio brand Cleer. Ron showed appreciation and support for the product, though he also pointed out fatal issues such as poor audio quality with down-facing speakers (as sounds travel upward) and insecure hinges between compartments.

Not to discourage the Brian’s passion, and as Ron had plans to launch a new division of youth commuting entertainment called “Blackbox” under Cleer, he invited Brian and the 「DesignXcel」team to visit their manufacture base in Shenzhen for an internal ideation workshop with their Spainish chief designer. This resulted in Brian working freelance on the R&D of ST3 together with their Shenzhen team, as it was then included in Blackbox’s overall product schedule. In time, the first all-rounded solution designed for street musicians will be out to light up the city.
