|Design is about solving problems, it is the first thing every design educator teaches their students. Janet Law from HKDI found that there are lots of elderly people who avoid washing their hair because of the physical pain that it may cause them. Even the healthy elderly may find it difficult to lift their arms for that much amount of time, not to mention those who are disabled or require the help of a wheelchair to move around.
To solve this problem, Janet decided to design a product that helps the elderly people wash their hair, where they can sit down and let the machine do the rest. The machine “Freshen” is connected to both shampoo and water, once the elderly person positions his or her head under the machine, it will mix the shampoo and water to clean their hair. The machine can also blow-dry their hair. As a result, the elderly can enjoy clean hair without even getting their hands wet.
Through the connection of the Hong Kong Electrical Appliance Industries Association (HKEAIA), Wing Sang Bakelite Electrical Manufactory Limited expressed their interest in Janet’s idea, and agreed to support her to invent and develop the idea. The「DesignXcel」team then acted as a platform for them to showcase the collaboration outcome, hoping that “Freshen” can inspire more products that make the elderly’s daily life easier.
