Project Description

Fragile 2.0 |

Prompted by the「DesignXcel」team, the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association (HKJJA) has been very welcoming to know more about Florence Chong’s final-year project “Fragile”. When they first met, Florence explained to Catherine Chan, General Manager of HKJJA, her series of work tries to illustrate the fragility and flexibility of glass using lines, color and texture formed by the pâte de verre (a kiln casting method that literally means “paste of glass”) technique. Her exploration of the material brought out its unusual qualities, for example, glass beads were fused into simple bowl forms of a rare texture. The resultant edges on the pieces were crude, uncontrollable and extremely fragile.

Most people including Catherine might not have even considered these glass containers to be made of glass at first glance. Seeing the potential of the artistic form of Florence’s works, HKJJA and their member supplier worked out a daring plan with her to try the pâte de verre technique on semi-precious stones or even jade. Catherine walked Florence through their resourceful storage of gem stone samples in Hung Hom, where the graduate picked Rhodochrosite, Quartz and some other gems as the foundation for her new piece. Both Florence and HKJJA were expecting a beautifully crafted work of art through the bold act of testing the nature and state of various materials and methods – the “Fragile 2.0”. The works were also to be showcased at the Hong Kong International Jewelry Manufacturers’ Show under the pavilion of Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers’ Association (HKJMA) as an encouragement of artistic creation.
